Helen Merrill With Strings
Helen Merrill
Released:
Jan 1956
Label:
Verve Records
While Helen Merrill's debut remains one of the greatest vocal jazz albums of all time, she never again equaled it. Still, Merrill released a number of intriguing LPs throughout the years. Here, the label probably brought in the strings to broaden Merrill's appeal, but if anything, this is as moody, misty and eccentric as the jazz singer's previous outing with modernist arranger Gil Evans. To let the beatniks know that she was part of N.Y.C.'s cool jazz scene, Merrill sings "Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most."
