Early Baroque composer Giovanni Gabrieli composed for the very space used to record this album, St. Mark's Basilica in Venice. His "polychoral" technique -- placing two or more choirs at opposite ends of the room -- results in massive washes of sound and long, eerie reverberations. The 15-part "In ecclesiis" almost terrifies with its sheer walls of sound, which threaten holy intervention from all sides.
