Just as the New Wave of British Heavy Metal started to wind down, an album came along that totally rewrote the rulebook on sonic heaviness, as well as rock music's lyrical relationship to evil. With their 1981 debut, the ludicrously raw Welcome to Hell, Venom took the aggression innovated by the likes of Motorhead and Diamond Head and dropped it into a giant cauldron of boiling blood and guts. In the process, the band invented a new form of brutality, one that served as the foundation for speed, thrash and black metal. On this record, Venom truly sound like the "Sons of Satan."
