Sheik's score to an experimental musical, Spring Awakening, makes for a sophisticated, challenging collection that occupies the uncharted territory between radio pop and rocked-up Broadway neuvo. Falling somewhere between the cast recording of Rent and Sheik's famous "Barely Breathing," these nervy tales concern boarding school teens at the mercy of their hormonal impulses. The project fits Sheik's strengths as a writer: razor-sharp melodic hooks and -- like the subjects of the play itself -- songs that toe a line between slightly awkward and deliriously oversexed.
