10 Days Out makes you wonder if, now that Shepherd is no longer a heartthrob teenage guitar whiz, this is the blues he wanted to play all along. With a uniformly raw feel, appearances from Etta Baker, the transcendent Hubert Sumlin and some unknown guys with cool blues names like "Cootie" -- not to mention Howlin' Wolf's whole band on a few tracks -- the album will not disappoint purists and will surprise more than a few naysayers. The set of songs relies on rare gems with little standard fare, another nice touch.
