In the early '90s, few bands defined the progressive streak of post-hardcore as resolutely as Drive Like Jehu. Though their debut represented a bold expansion of the genre's limited scope, the album in no way prepared fans for Yank Crime. With four tracks breaking the seven-minute mark, the record is a testament to the San Diego quartet's interest in extended composition and complex time signatures, as well as the sinewy guitar dissonance of Rick Froberg and John Reis. On "Luau" and "Super Unison" their abrasive propulsion hits points at which it becomes both wiry and fluid. Utterly ingenious.
