Billed as a death metal supergroup of sorts, but largely the work of guitar-master journeyman Michael Arnott (Carcass, Carnage, Spiritual Beggars), Arch Enemy's debut album thuds into heavy sludge enormity a little over two minutes into opener "Bury Me an Angel." From there, Arnott's irrefutable riffology takes center stage all over the place, and the result is an album that delivers the ZZ Top-like guitar fireworks and classic rock simplicity of best-melodic-death-metal-album-ever Heartwork, which Arnott is also on. Halfway through "Cosmic Retribution," they swing!
