The first Maiden album to utilize both synthesizers and synth-guitars, Somewhere in Time, released in 1986, gets something of a bad rap. The fact that guitarist Adrian Smith wrote most of the lyrics, instead of Bruce Dickinson, didn't help the album's reception, and while no one could be expected to re-create the creative intensity of "The Number of the Beast" every time out, "Wasted Years" and at least the title of "The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner" bring back the band's golden years. Synthesizers or not, guitarists Smith and Dave Murray always sound good.
