When rock 'n' rollers parked up at Inspiration Point, it was The Platters who provided the make-out music. The Platters broke away from the doo-wop pack with creamy ballads that put Tony Williams' tenor front and center. Williams' voice soared on an array of era-defining hits such as "Only You," "The Great Pretender" and "Twilight Time." Songs like "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" were old standards that young rock and R&B aficionados slow-danced to at senior proms. Williams was The Platters' not-so-secret weapon, and he put a cool yet carnal cast to Johnny Mathis' romantic adolescent dramas.
