Of all the groups connected to Britain's post-punk movement, the Banshees were the tightest and most polished live act (that isn't a backhanded slam; these guys could play). That makes Nocturne one of the best official concert documents of the era. Two sublime Beatles covers (including their hit version of "Dear Prudence") help show how much the band drew from the 1960s, while Siouxsie's unique persona and powerful pipes ensure the band avoids any overt retro leanings. The best cut is the chiming "Happy House," a number whose peppy veneer only serves to make it more disturbing.
