Eliane Elias Plays Jobim

Eliane Elias Plays Jobim by Eliane Elias
Released: Dec 1989
Label: EMI MUSIC JAPAN INC.
The prodigiously talented Brazilian jazz pianist Eliane Elias worked with Tom Jobim's lyricist -- Vinicius de Moraes -- while in her teens. After concentrating on American bop, Elias returned to Jobim's music and selected some standards and lesser-known numbers from his songbook for this set (including "Sabia" and "Passarim"). Elias slants this towards harmonically rich bop piano but her innate sense of bossa nova and her intriguing way of working with Jobim's melodies should appeal to listeners who are afraid of jazz records that feature Jack DeJohnette (drums), Eddie Gomez (bass) and Nana Vasconcelos (percussion).
