Town Hall Concert (Single)
Charles Mingus
Released:
Apr 1964
Label:
Fantasy Records
This isn't the troubled 1962 Town Hall date in which Mingus first tried his hand at presenting the music that would become Epitaph -- but rather a document of his killer 1964 sextet featuring Eric Dolphy. "Praying With Eric" (also known as "Meditations") is the 27-minute highlight: a work with gorgeous classical-inspired writing (check Dolphy's flute intro, and Mingus' bowed-bass lines) as well as peerlessly sizzling jazz (when Dolphy switches to bass clarinet). In its stylistic diversity, this composition embodies the integrationist principles of its Civil Rights-inspired moment. Pure genius.
