The first of Nile guitarist Karl Sanders' solo records, Saurian Meditation is as focused on Egyptian themes as the band, but this is not a metal album. Quiet (in comparison) and employing an array of acoustic instruments and Middle Eastern-flavored rhythms, Saunders proves he has more to say musically than the precision of technical death metal. "Luring the Doom Serpent" shows his knack for awesome song titles, and his vaunted proficiency with stringed instruments is very much in effect, but "The Elder God Shrine" and "Temple of Lunar Ascension" are the real highlights.
