Love is the Thing was such a big hit for Nat "King" Cole that he was paired once again with string arranger Gordon Jenkins on another lush ballad set. This time out, not all of the songs are worthy of Nat Cole ("Magnificent Obsession," anyone?), but this kicks off with the definitive reading of "The Very Thought of You," a song that suits Cole's "lost in the clouds" style perfectly. "For All We Know," "This Is All I Ask" and "But Beautiful" form a philosophical triptych that belongs in every collection.
