Stately and sumptuously downbeat, All Alone is widely -- and accurately -- considered to be Sinatra's least substantial torch album with the grandiose stringmeister Gordon Jenkins (compare this to their brilliant work on No One Cares and Where Are You?). Still, this is worth more than a listen, with every song written and performed in 3/4 waltz time. Half the cuts come from the pen of Irving Berlin, but the most successful waltz may just be Ralph Blane/Hugh Martin's "The Girl Next Door." The once-rare bonus cut "Come Waltz with Me" was originally going to be the set's title tune.
