The fifth album from Norway's nine-piece Jaga Jazzist cheerily thumbs its nose at category, drawing from jazz, progressive rock, electronica and classical minimalism to create a fluid, pulsing, lyrical brew that the word "fusion" barely describes. Careening from extended jams into meticulously composed contrapuntal passages, it's a white-knuckled ride through terrain shared with fellow travelers like Tortoise, Pat Metheny, Steve Reich, John Barry and Angelo Badalamenti. Splitting the difference between easy listening and rocket science, it's as inviting as it is overwhelming.
