Bassekou Kouyate may speak Fula, but most Americans don't. If you're going to find your way around his world, it will be through the lens of the four African lutes (ngonis) that break into an almost baroque babble with each song. This is revolutionary music in Mali, unheard of before Kouyate created it, rock'n'roll in spirit if not in sound, and Amy Sacko's urgent singing somehow clues us in to that. "Musow (For Our Women)" is the masterpiece here, a ferocious gallop of a song which seems to break wide open in its center, pouring out a universe of feeling and then buttoning it back up again.
