Darius Rucker's success as a country crooner derives from the fact that he doesn't work too hard at fitting in. As with its predecessor, 2008's Learn to Live, Charleston, SC 1966 is all about the singer establishing a common ground between modern Nashville and the roots-pop of his former band, Hootie & The Blowfish. Laced with fiddle and mandolin, more than a few tracks actually betray a love for modern bluegrass. "Love Will Do That" and the lead single "Come Back Song" very much feel influenced by Sam Bush.
