Johannesburg-born London folkie Flynn is a traditionalist, but no purist. Soul trumpets, R&B organs and Afro-Caribbean percussion give his cascading reels and drones flexibility, and he's got enough pop sense to hook you a line at a time, whether his topic is boxing, guns, religion, "cow-tipping exhibitions" or which women he met in which months. When he turns death-dirge-y, Brit hopeful Laura Marling and his younger sister provide Linda Thompson-style counterpoint. And the four lower-key 2009 EP tracks added to this album's U.S. edition suggest he's getting more propulsive as time goes on.
