Lil B is a divisive and contradictory talent, and Im Gay (Im Happy) will provoke fans and haters alike, from the gimmick title to his meandering rhymes. He doesn't have a great flow, yet he still achieves rambling epiphanies. Brilliantly, he builds "Unchain Me" over suicidal thoughts and a loop of Lou Gramm's "Lost in the Shadows (Lost Boys Theme)." On "I Seen That Light," he claims, "Last time I made love is when I wrote this song." By setting aside his silly "Wonton Soup"/cooking dance antics in favor of soulful tunes, the Berkeley rapper has made his most accessible work to date.
