In the late '60s there were rockers experimenting with country and country singers experimenting with rock. The difference is subtle yet significant. John Hartford, raised on the Mississippi River, was a homegrown country boy whose life and art, just like Kris Kristofferson's, was changed by Bob Dylan. As with Aereo-Plain, its predecessor, Morning Bugle sees Hartford infusing bluegrass with neo-Beat poetics and surreal structural tricks. He's essentially inventing progressive bluegrass.
