Collaborating with trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, who also serves as Artistic Director of Jazz at Lincoln Center, Slow Hand continues his tribute to the shared roots of American blues and jazz. This sound began with his previous studio album, Clapton, but it sounds more fleshed on this white-tie-affair live set. Having a full ensemble behind him definitely helps; the brass in particular gets all horny-n-thorny. Clapton attempts just a single classic rocker, "Layla." But it doesn't feel as alive as the standards (though in all honesty the duo's version of "Forty-Four" can't touch Little Feat's).
