Dixie Chicken
Little Feat
Released:
Jan 1973
Label:
Warner Bros.
The one true masterpiece in Little Feat's discography. Lowell George's immersion in New Orleans funk was so firm, so personal, that to this day a lot of fans assume the band grew up in the South. What betrays George's Hollywood childhood is the music's sentimental grandeur, its sing-along choruses and bigger-than-life back-up vocals. Much like his pals Randy Newman and Van Dyke Parks, he was a modern-day Aaron Copland who grew up in the age of rock 'n' roll and the cinematic romance of the American experience. You can picture a kaleidoscope of showboat showgirls dancing to the title track.
