Some months before the release of The Dreamer, Etta James announced that this would be her last studio collection. The soulful romp of R&B, blues and rock is in the same territory of her most celebrated strengths, though a few selections -- like the somewhat bizarre "Welcome to the Jungle" and Little Big Town's "Boondocks" -- try a little too hard to sound contemporary. Still, "Misty Blue" and "Groove Me" shine a light on her gutsy ability to breathe life into a song, while "Let Me Down Easy" closes out the set -- and her career -- on a stunning note.
