On The Dreamer, The Believer, Common offers a few retorts to critics who assumed he fell off after 2009’s disastrous Universal Mind Control. This leads to weird moments for the normally pacific rapper, like beating down a thug who claims, “You’re Hollywood” on “Raw (How You Like It)” and crowing about “hoe-*ss n*gg*s” on “Sweet.” No I.D.’s production keeps the rapper on an even keel, though, and he offers enough evidence of the street-conscious lyricist, from “The Dreamer” to “Windows,” to reassure his fans that the Common we know and love is still here.
