Depending on your perspective, Ani D's gazillionth album is either a return to form or a rehashing of the same ideas she's spent much of her career on: quirky riffs; heavily confessional, heavily literal lyrics about pain and politics; that half-muttered, half-swallowed, all-earnest singing; and a folksy palette. So it will either feel familiar or, well, overly familiar. That said, while the politics return to themes she's covered many times (anti-war struggles, abortion), she expands that folksy palette in new directions, trying out slide guitars, sultry circus struts, twangy blues and more.
