What year is it again? The last time Vince Clarke and Martin Gore worked together, it was 1981; the last time techno had this kind of melodic punch, swollen and brutish but still somehow rounded and yielding, was the mid-'00s. That's right, techno: the former bandmates, now of Erasure and Depeche Mode, respectively, have come together for an album of pure, instrumental oonce oonce. But the sound design is as rich as their resumes would promise, and for a pair of 50-somethings, they're unconcerned about pulling muscles. This is techno that's in it for the long haul, whatever the calendar says.
