The Brooklyn duo Tanlines' name evokes '80s teen comedies on VHS, and so, in a way, does their music, with yearning hooks and gleaming synths that wouldn't sound out of place in a John Hughes flick. Their zeitgeisty debut album cannily yokes barebones dance beats to billowing harmonies, hazy synths and Afro-pop accents, touching on like-minded artists like Vampire Weekend, Joakim, Teengirl Fantasy and other contemporary tropical-pop troubadours; unusually, there's a touch of the Ramones in Tanlines' melodies and even their delivery.
