Lucifer, the third album from the West Coast duo Peaking Lights, opens not with a haze of sulfur but a whiff of lavender and spring rain. They stress that the title signifies "Venus, bearer of light," which makes sense, given the delicate sparkle of songs like "Moonrise" and "Beautiful Son," which find a middle ground between the lo-fi experiments of High Places and the reposing pop of Beach House. Elsewhere, they explore spindly digi-dub and fourth-world disco, as if to suggest that the sun never sets on their pastel-covered empire.
