It's exciting to see this important pair of records from the trumpeter's late-'90s catalog now remastered and reissued, courtesy of his own label. In addition to featuring a choice selection of the leader's tunes and soloing, we also get to hear a generous helping of Chris Potter's saxophone. Titles like "Millennium Bug" may date these sessions, but there's nothing retrograde or old-fashioned with the actual music, which has absorbed Ornette Coleman and other next-level jazz compositional lights in the service of doing something simultaneously new and steeped in the best kind of tradition.
