Teena Marie was working on Beautiful when she passed away in 2010, so her daughter Alia Rose finished the album for her. It's great to hear a voice we've missed so much. There is the opening intro of "The Long Play," where she does one of her patented spoken-word "rapps"; she croons in Spanish on "Maria Bonita" while quoting from her classic "Portuguese Love"; and she breathily re-imagines Curtis Mayfield's "Give Me Your Love." Even Rick James' daughter Ty James drops some rhymes on "Rare Breed." "Baby, I'm a rare breed/ I'm that very special one," sings Lady T. And so she was.
