Released a decade after Will Johnson started Centro-Matic as a vehicle for his prolific outpouring of songs, Fort Recovery is a set of evocative mid-tempo rock that isn't so different from their earliest singles. Not that that's a problem: Johnson's lamenting poetics are delivered with clear-headed imagery, especially with lovely mid-LP songs like "I See Through You" and "In Such Crooked Time." He's still trying to break your heart with rockers like "Take a Ride," even while aiming for the jugular.
