Description of Post-Hardcore

Post-hardcore is the result of punks learning to play instruments. It combines the frantic energy and attitude of hardcore, but anti-establishment ranting is replaced by personal introspection. During the mid-'80s, it emerged from hardcore's training ground -- Washington, D.C. -- with bands like Fugazi, Jawbox, Dag Nasty and Nation of Ulysses, while Chicago also proved fertile with Big Black/Rapeman and Naked Raygun. In the '90s, the second wave of post-hardcore evolved as Chavez, Hot Water Music, Jawbreaker and Thrice added more polish and melody, while Quicksand -- which formed out of the ashes of hardcore luminaries Youth of Today and Gorilla Biscuits -- took a more metal approach. Proto-emo groups, such as Sunny Day Real Estate and At the Drive-In, would later go on to influence bands like Fall Out Boy and Jimmy Eat World.
