Rhapsody

Andre Previn and Shelly Manne kickstarted the "jazz does Broadway" subgenre and released many theme albums before ending with this take on Leonard Bernstein's flawless score to West Side Story. Previn was at his very best with Manne; tough and concise one minute, light and lyrical the next. This trio, with Red Mitchell on bass, was one of the joys of 1950s jazz.
