Jared Leto's sensitively rocking band offers its third album, a collection of contemporary hard rock with elements of what can only be described as "emo-prog." Decidedly less aggressive than A Beautiful Lie, This Is War has the somber tones and dramatic choruses of a Coldplay album. It moves along with a recurring chorale backing ("Closer to the Edge" and "Vox Populi"), skittering U2 guitars (the title track) and expansive, gathering storm intros that show the band's determination to challenge the borders of mainstream emo-rock.
