Decidedly darker than (but recorded just as perfectly as) their debut, Zoroaster, Acid King's second album is psychedelic, linked to the past at its core and heavy as all hell. From the opening seconds of "Electric Machine," Lori S.'s vocals are as big a draw as the no-frills guitars and cone-frying low-ends. Not only do they shed the "stoner rock" mantle, they totally creepify "39 Lashes" from Jesus Christ Superstar and successfully cover both Hawkwind and Bachman-Turner Overdrive. Sleep's Holy Mountain fans will want to check out "Carve the 5."
