Recorded live at James Monroe High School in the Bronx, Death Mix's original 1983 pressing was only distributed to the five boroughs. This Bambaataa mix tape became hip-hop's white whale, original pressings tantalizing vinyl archaeologists around the world. Its sound has influenced generations of producers, mixologists and turntablists; the cover has been reused by the likes of DJ Shadow and QBert. Sure, the legend outstrips the roughly mixed audio and extended electro breaks, but this is a wonderful historical document of hip-hop's origins.
