Perhaps the only internationally recognized jazz master to come from New Zealand, this veteran pianist earned a 2006 Grammy nomination for this vivid, often haunting set with his trio. Two high-energy cuts bookend a number of midnight ballads, with Broadbent stretching out alone or working the kind of democratic piano/bass/drum interplay that Bill Evans popularized.
