Look no further for the latest in Euro-modernist writing for guitar. The highlight is Georg Friedrich Haas' simply named "Guitar Quartet." The acoustic guitar is an interesting venue for the composer's spectral inclinations; the instruments' collective lack of long-tone sustain keeps him from repeating some of his past moves (though the wash of strumming effects that begins in the sixth minute has a very Haas feel). The Aleph players are crisp, too, in Manuel Hidalgo's "Kampftanz" -- a piece that has pointillist gestures, atonal (acoustic) power chords and a wide range of dynamic attack.
