This Is Where It Ends
Released: Jul 2011
Label: Nuclear Blast
At first, this Oakland gang's fourth album sticks to by-the-book shriek-and-grunt metalcore, give or take brief Celtic-like guitar noodling. But by the third cut they're slowing down to a trudge, and in a few later songs ("The Past Will Haunt Us Both," "Rebirth," and especially the seven-minute "In This Life of Pain") they let in a funeral-parlor piano, and stretch their gloom to almost Opeth prog lengths. Elsewhere, they stay closer to pure hardcore punk ("My Retaliation") and death metal ("The Death Plague"), then end with a Spanish version of the relatively dynamic "Royalty Into Exile."
