Clarinetist Michael Marcus and trumpeter Ted Daniel played as a duo for decades -- and each has worked with some other all-time greats. (Names like Jaki Byard, Henry Threadgill, Sonny Sharrock and Archie Shepp are in their bios.) Here, they invite veteran avant-drummer Andrew Cyrille to make a trio. It was a good call, since Cyrille's subtle shadings add drive but do not overwhelm the pair's chemistry. There's free playing here, but also composition. "Vigilance (Song for Troy Davis)" has a thorny, though not dour, air of protest. And "Balance Within the Realm" has a bluesy, processional feel.
