Angela Hacker's performances from season five of Nashville Star sound exactly like one might expect: prefabricated. But within this assembly-line production shine a few true gems. Her cover of Dan Penn's "Do Right Woman Do Right Man" showcases Hacker's gritty soul, and the chorus opens up like a flower blooming from a garbage can. Her raspy crooning on Linda Ronstadt's "When Will I Be Loved" further suggests that Hacker may want to lose her hack band and pursue a country-rock direction. Turning Otis Redding's "Hard to Handle" into a raucous duet works better than the Black Crows' cover.
