Angels of Light records -- well, almost everything Angels honcho Michael Gira touches -- are gothic affairs, and We Are Him is no different. "Promise of Water" is a desperate trudge through a sonic swamp (rattlesnake included), while the title track is an eerie barnburner that you can actually clap along to. That kind of playfulness distinguishes this Angels release; even Gira's gut-rumbling baritone is (slightly) less whisky-soaked here, and "Sunflower's Here to Stay" is downright uppity. That said, these jams are still spookier than 99 percent of everything else out there.
