Behind The Lines
Released: Jul 2014
How is it that this Austrian soprano can nail the American modernist sentimentality of Ives' songs (Tracks 8-10) as well as sing Schubert's "Ellens Gesang I"? Don't worry about it; just let her glorious sound hit you. This set of war songs -- a triumph not only of technique, but of programming imagination -- is great stuff, front to back. Particularly fine, though, are a Rachmaninoff grief-romance (Track 6), three tart Eisler items (Tracks 12-14) and two of Weill's Whitman settings (Tracks 24 and 25). Aside from Beethoven and Schumann, she even has time for Wolfgang Rihm's "Untergang."
