Back to Love is Anthony Hamilton's first album in three years, but it doesn't matter. Hamilton has a timeless approach to soul music, and even when he sings over a trendy arrangement of ambient synths and bass for "Never Let Go," he and Keri Hilson work it like an old-school slow jam. If there's a knock against Back to Love, it's that he plays it too safe, and only "Life Has a Way" features the kind of topical songwriting that first brought him renown years ago. But it's hard to front on effortlessly smooth tracks like "Writing on the Wall" and "Woo."
