Anti-Social Music

This mixed bag of commissions shows, at the very least, the overwhelming passion of downtown "punk" new-music ensemble Anti-Social Music. Pat Muchmore's Fracture II startles with piano, string, accordion and sample juxtapositions played with intense fury. Then there's the weird, microtonalist Beat poetry of William Brittelle's Seven Songs, which sounds like Harry Partch. Sadly, that avant garde is long past, making Brittelle's work seem as sophomoric as the idea of selling new music with safety pins. Listen past the gimmick and find some good stuff.
