Archie Bell & the Drells

Archie Bell & the Drells

Biography

Archie Bell streamlined James Brown by polishing his R&B tunes like gleaming chrome Cadillac hubcaps. He only had one monster hit, but "Tighten Up" (1968) is the Citizen Kane of feel-good dance songs: perfection at 45 RPM. The Vietnam War sidelined Bell, but he bounced back by helping define the Philly Soul movement of the '70s.
