Schoenberg's high German Romanticism is on display here, rather than the austere atonality for which he is best known. He sketched much of his Chamber Symphony No. 2 by 1916, it wasn't until the late 1930s that he revisited it, completing it in 1940. As with Verklärte Nacht, it bears the mark of Schoenberg's early compositional style.
