Slug may never get recognized as one of hip-hop's greatest storytellers, but he deserves to be. The Minneapolis rapper excels at confessional rhyming first-person narratives that are so vivid you'd think they were ripped straight from his diary. On To All My Friends, Blood Makes the Blade Holy, a pair of EPs packaged into a mini-album, Slug raps about vehicular homicide ("Scalp"), young love ("The Number None") and drug-dealing homeboys ("The Major Leagues") as a backing band plays extended riffs and beery blues. It's not Lil Wayne, but it will more than do.
