The solo debut from Animal Collective's Avey Tare (born David Portner) was recorded while the world around him crumbled: He separated from his wife (múm's Kría Brekkan), his grandmother passed on, and his sister Heather was diagnosed with cancer. It's easy to project these myriad hardships/tragedies onto Down There's murky, fractured vibe. Indeed, it is a bit of a downer, and at times an impenetrable listen. Then again, it totally embodies Tare's core aesthetic. He's the truly weird one in Animal Collective, the dude most interested in sound as disorientation, discordance and darkness.
